Sterling, VA (May 22, 2019) - As the two teams warmed up for the Dulles District tournament championship, there wasn't much separating the Loudoun Valley Vikings and the Park View Patriots. They had split their regular season matchups with the Vikings winning in April and and the Patriots getting a win in May.
Although Park View had whipped through their regular season district games at 11-1-0, Loudoun Valley had a better overall record at 15-2-2. And now here they were, the top two teams meeting in the final.
With both teams featuring strong defense and excellent goalkeeping, it came as a shock that anyone would score quickly. But Park View earned a corner kick just five minutes into the match, and Patrick Rivas curled the kick around the near post for a stunning 1-0 lead. With a roaring home crowd behind them, the Patriots grabbed the momentum.
But equally stunning was what happened next. Just two minutes later, a quick cross from the right flank by Viking Jefferson Martinez found John Dugger in front of the Park View net. His header was too much for Arnoldo Hernandez to save, and suddenly the score was tied, 1-1.
The Vikings now had the momentum and they held on to it. for the next quarter of the game, the Vikings had better chances and again found a way to score. A throw-in from the same right side found Mason Field waiting and he calmly finished another header for the Viking lead, 2-1.
For the rest of the first half and the first ten minutes of the second period, both teams had great chances to score--and overall play became more physical. Not bad or unfair physical play, just tough, smart and fearless play. And after a skirmish during a Park View corner kick, the Patriots were awarded a penalty kick which Anthony Lampe converted to tie the score, 2-2.
Unfortunately for both teams--and for spectators who were enjoying a brilliantly played title match--the game was called with fourteen minutes remaining after serious injuries to Park View's Jonathan Szutenbach and Loudoun Valley's Cooper Sayles. The two first team All-Dulles District players were involved in a powerful mid-air collision that necessarily ended the match.
By virtue of making it to the final, both team advance to the regional tournament.
Final Score: Park View 2 - Loudoun Valley 2
