Sterling, VA (May 20, 2019) - The Dominion Titans had earned their spot in the Dulles District semifinals with a convincing win over Woodgrove. But waiting for them were the Park View Patriots, riding an eleven-game winning streak and hungry to move on into regional play.
Although the odds were not in their favor, the visiting Titans were entitled to a bit of confidence. Just a week ago they had played well before falling to the Patriots, 2-1. And as this game started the Dominion defense and midfield stifled the Park View attack. The Patriots' methodical and possession minded center players had something to do with that, too, as they patiently searched for cracks in the opposing defense.
They suddenly found one just ten minutes into the game as first team all-District forward Elton Quintanilla powered a shot past Dominion keeper Ian Whitfield for an early lead. Whitfield, also a first team selection, got a hand on the ball, but the shot was too strong and only changed direction slightly. Moments later, Quintanilla deked Whitfield and found a yawning net right in front of him, but amazingly did not convert, keeping the score 1-0 at halftime.
The game had the typical marks of intense playoff action with physical play all over the field. With the score still the same early in the second half, Dominion forward Chaz Donaldson was given his second yellow card and the automatic ejection that comes with the red.
This could have been the moment where the Titans collapsed, but they rallied and almost immediately Eder Mejia scored off a Dominion corner kick. Thirty minutes left game on.
For the next ten minutes both teams searched for the goal that would break the tie yet could find no success. But then the Park View attacking skills started to break down the defense. In quick succession, Kevin Martinez and Jason Amaya scored Patriot goals off brilliant assists from Quintanilla. Fifteen minutes left, game pretty much over.
To their credit, the Titans continued to press for any way to overcome the deficit. But they could not break through as the Patriots advanced to the District final against Loudoun Valley.
Final Score: Park View 3 - Dominion 1
