Brambleton, VA (April 30, 2019) - When choosing a game to photograph this late in the season, this writer checks the standings and looks for key matchups. Good games are usually between teams with similar records and/or top places in the standings.
This game, between the John Champe Knights and the host Briar Woods Falcons, had both. And, as the announcer made clear, the winner of this one would take over the top spot in the Potomac District.
Chas Sumser Photography was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.
Standings can be deceiving, and this time they were very much so as the Falcons bolted to an early lead and never looked back. Fifteen minutes into the match, Briar Woods led, 8-0, behind four goals from Aaron Casteel. The Knights' Dalton Young finally put one on the scoreboard for the visitors, but at halftime the the lead was a commanding 10-1 in favor of Briar Woods.
John Champe had a much better second half, led by the dual scoring of Young and Carson Boyle, but the Falcons were never really at any risk of relinquishing ownership of his match.
William Pompillio led the second half scoring attack for Briar Woods with four of the team's eight goals, but the real story may have been the eleven assists from all-world setup man, Danny McMinn.
It's clear that the Knights are one of the stronger teams in the district and they will be competitive in the playoffs. But it's also apparent that Briar Woods is the absolute team to beat.
Final Score: Briar Woods 18 - John Champe 8
