Ashburn, VA (September 28, 2019) - Friday Night Lights are an American tradition, but Saturday Afternoon football isn't too bad either. On a hot late-September day, the Urbana Hawks visited the Broad Run Spartans for a rare, but welcome daytime matchup.
Energizing the festive atmosphere were the Broad Run revelers just finishing the local parade and filled with anticipation for evening events. Add to that a celebration of the school's 50th anniversary and you get a packed house in maroon and gold.
The Hawks' season was off to a stellar start. At 3-0, the team from Ijamsville, MD, looked on paper like a worthy opponent for the Spartans. Also, at 3-0 coming into the game, the home team was already ranked No. 12 in the metro area.
The first quarter was tight with the Hawks actually ahead, 7-6, before the Spartans would score again to lead at the end of the period, 13-7. But Broad Run exploded for three touchdowns in the second quarter and virtually sealed the victory with a blistering display of offensive prowess.
Trailing 34-7 as the third quarter began, Urbana switched quarterbacks to try to jumpstart their offense. But Broad Run would be the only team to score in the second half. Just a few minutes into the period they took a 41-7 lead which meant the clock would run continuously, speeding up the game and sending the celebration on to the next event.
Perhaps the best moment of the game came at the very end when Brett Griffis replaced starting quarterback (and older brother) Mitch Griffis and promptly ran the ball in for the final touchdown. The Spartans were flagged for an excessive celebration, but it was worth it to the siblings.
Final Score: Broad Run 56 - Urbana 7
