Ashburn, VA (February 9, 2021) - After coasting through the first round, the Independence Tigers fully expected a tougher matchup in the Region 3B semifinal. The Manassas Park Cougars, tonight's opponent, had pulled a big upset by defeating the #3 seeded Goochland in overtime so they had some momentum coming into the game. This simply wasn't going to be an easy thirty-two point win.

Chas Sumser Photography was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.

Well, that was sort of right... It wasn't thirty-two points this time, it was thirty-six.

When Manassas Park scored five minutes into the first period, they were already well behind after Independence opened the game with a twelve--point run. The Tigers were hitting on all cylinders, and their defense made it impossible for the Cougars to get any kind of an open look. The first quarter ended with Independence in front by a healthy margin, 18-6.

Once they got going, Manassas Park tried to keep it close. But, as the second period proceeded, the Tigers moved further ahead and expanded the lead to twenty-two. Guard Wes Williams ignited the Independence offense, and forwards Gabriel Coulthurst and Griffin Patterson finished things off. At halftime it was 40-18, Tigers.

To their credit, the Cougars were hitting their shots at a high percentage when they could get open. They just couldn't get open very often.

As they game progressed, the Independence lead only continued to grow. Every player on the roster got a chance to contribute--and that will be invaluable as the team continues to advance in the post season. At the end of the third period, the Tiger lead was a full thirty points, 59-29, and the fourth quarter simply became irrelevant.

Next up for the Tigers is a regional championship matchup with top-seeded Skyline.

Final Score: Independence 73 - Manassas Park 37
