Leesburg, VA (February 6, 2021) - It is fitting that the two best boys basketball teams in the Dulles District would meet in the championship game. They earned their spots through steady play during this odd, short season. Meeting twice, the Dominion Titans won the first one and the Loudoun County Captains, the second. With regional spots already secured, this one was for the District trophy and bragging rights.

Chas Sumser Photography was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.

Both teams started a bit slowly, but by the end of the first quarter the Captains had established a lead that they would never relinquish, 15-8. The pace at which County played had already begun to exhaust the Titans who simply could not keep up with the Captains' slashing offense and hustling defense. Even when Dominion forced turnovers, the County defense was back in place well before the Titans could get down the court.

By halftime, the difference was ten points, and it would never get any closer than that. Dominion senior Justin Mann was clearly hobbled by a recent ankle injury, but the real story was the depth of the Loudoun County bench. They seamlessly moved players in and out with no noticeable drop-off in intensity.

Dominion had no answer for County's towering junior center George Mwesigwa. His smooth, consistent play on both ends of the court helped the Captains expand their led to seventeen points by the end of the third period. The Titans never gave up, but they simply could not find a way to establish a scoring run or prevent County from the same.

Most expected the Captains to be in a rebuilding mode following last year's deep post-season run, but they have combined senior leadership with rising talent to produce another excellent team. Tonight--even when they were running a possession offense in the final quarter--the County offense was fluid, opportunistic and cohesive. Their performance was just the next stamp on a surprising season.

Both teams now progress to regionals, a chance for the Captains to continue their progress and a chance for the Titans to rebound from tonight's loss.

Final Score: Loudoun County 58 - Dominion 42
