Sterling, VA (February 4, 2021) - Even with COVID restrictions impacting the whole season, the semifinals of the Dulles District boys basketball tournament is still a big deal. The winners would play for the district championship and earn a spot in the regional tournament. A lot was at stake for the visiting #6 seed Loudoun Valley Vikings and the home standing #2 seed Dominion Titans.

The Vikings had advanced to this game with an upset victory over Broad Run. Peaking at just the right time they were poised to give the Titans a really good shot. But Dominion started off hot with Aidan Edwards hitting two three-pointers right away. At the end of the first quarter, Dominion held a sturdy, if not surprising lead, 18-8. Efficient on both ends of the court, the Titans were clearly the stronger team.

Midway through the second quarter, however, the Titans were forced to call a timeout after Loudoun Valley had scored eight straight points to nearly wipe out the Dominion lead. The Vikings had opened the period with an aggressive press that forced the Titans out of their patient offense and led to a quick series of turnovers. At halftime, Dominion barely led, 20-19.

Loudoun Valley continued to attack after the break, and Jayden Johnson hit a huge three to put the Vikings ahead for the first time. For the remainder of the third period the visitors held a slight lead, but Ryan Karlan ended the quarter with a clutch shot to put Dominion back in the lead for good, 32-31, as the buzzer sounded.

The Vikings stayed close, but when Edwards canned another three at 5:35, Loudoun Valley was forced to call a timeout, down 37-33. The break failed to stem the tide, and Dominion continued to expand their lead with little flash and an abundance of solid teamwork and steady defense--and plenty of made free throws in the last few minutes.

It's on to the district championship game for the Titans as they will travel to meet the top seeded Loudoun County Captains on Saturday, February 6. Just as importantly, a trip to regionals is now guaranteed.

Final Score: Dominion 48 - Loudoun Valley 39
