Sterling, VA (February 17, 2020) - The last time the Heritage Pride faced the Dominion Titans, they were served up with a crushing, 72-44, defeat on their home court. The Titans had won their home game against the Pride, too, but the score was a more respectable 78-67.
And they say that it's hard to beat a team three times in one season so perhaps this matchup of the third (Dominion) and sixth (Heritage) seeds in the Dulles District tournament would provide a different result.
The Titans jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead, but by the time the first period ended the Pride had clawed their way back in and trailed only by three, 8-5. Somewhat surprisingly, the margin would stay the same through the second period as the two teams went to the locker rooms with the score at 20-17.
Energized, the Pride sparked a chaotic frenzy as the second half opened. Max Jannes, led the way for Heritage and pulled--maybe willed is a better term--his team to within one point at 25-24. But Dominion, with tremendous senior leadership even without center Mark Schroeder, went on a mini-burst to post a 34-29 lead as the third quarter ended.
And the final period simply belonged to the balanced attack of the Titans. With contributions from a deep bench, Max Mancuso and Samuel Shelton pushed the team to an insurmountable ten-point lead with 5:30 remaining. With a minute to go, head coach Anthony Eifler was able to sub out the entire Titan lineup, providing valuable playing time for reserve players.
Final Score: Dominion 53 - Heritage 39
