Purcellville, VA (February 5, 2019) – The gym was already packed following an exciting girls varsity basketball game. And the nightcap had a similar buildup with the Loudoun Valley Vikings boys team holding a slim lead in the Dulles District over cross-town rival, the Woodgrove Wolverines.
In the final week of the season, Woodgrove had four games in which to make a move in the standings, but none of them would be more important than this one.
Chas Sumser Photography was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.
The clear strategy for the Vikings was to control the pace of the game, and they did that behind the play of cool, calm and collected guard Trent Dawson. There was a striking difference between the frenetic style of their female counterparts, but Loudoun Valley had a smart gameplan designed to take full advantage of their possession-first style.
That approach worked well in the first quarter with low scoring the result for both teams. Woodgrove took their first lead with a minute remaining--in front of a roaring and appreciative pink student section--but Loudoun Valley got it right back with a three-pointer to close out the period, 13-10.
The Vikings took the game over in the third quarter, outscoring the Wolverines, 17-7. Again, their controlled method of play kept Woodgrove from seizing any momentum. In fact, Woodgrove had trouble getting off any uncontested shots. As the period came to a close, it seemed like Loudoun Valley had secured the win.
But, wait, in a stunning turnaround led by the heroic Brock Redman, Woodgrove began to close the gap. Midway through the fourth quarter, Loudoun Valley was forced into a timeout with their lead cut to six. And, with just twenty seconds remaining, Redman scored again to tie the game and send it to overtime, 39-39.
Neither team pulled away in the first overtime period, and the second one began with the score knotted, 45-45. But, the Wolverines exploded in the final period led by Tyler Blizzard who scraped and hustled, secured every loose ball, hit key baskets, and then nailed his free throws.
As the buzzer sounded, Woodgrove players and fans met at mid-court for a well-deserved celebration. They still have some work to do, but this huge win set up some great possibilities as the playoff picture comes into view.
Final score: Woodgrove 59 - Loudoun Valley 49
