Lansdowne VA (February 4, 2019) – There is just a week left in the regular season, and boys basketball playoff seeding in the Dulles District is still unclear. The Loudoun Valley Vikings are in the driver's seat, but the Woodgrove Wolverines and the Riverside Rams are battling for high seeds as well.
Simply by luck--and the weather--Woodgrove had the most to gain in these final seven days. They have four games left to play while Loudoun Valley and Riverside have just two each. It's not going to be easy, but the Wolverines could conceivably move in to the top seed.
First, they have to get by the Rams who have a better overall record, but were a half game behind Woodgrove before this game began.
Chas Sumser Photography was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.
Woodgrove opened up quickly, staking en early lead and seeming more organized than Riverside. Who could blame the Rams--who were dealing with the emotions of Senior Night--for getting off to a bit of a slow start. But, they got their feet under them quickly and at the end of the first quarter it was anyone's game, 17-17.
As the second quarter began, Riverside went on a brief tear and opened up a 34-28 lead halfway through the period. But the Wolverines, benefitting from two key buckets from Brock Redman, scored nine straight points to lead at halftime, 37-34.
That back and forth pace meant that each team would take a temporary lead in the third quarter. The Rams again emerged with a five-point lead, 55-50, through sheer grit and determination. No single player on the home team stood out yet, as a unit, they got contributions from everyone.
Riverside seemed to have the game in hand, but their lead again evaporated when Brady Drawbaugh hit two straight three-point shots from distance to tie the game at 58-58. They took the lead on another trey, but the Rams came back again and tied it at 65-65 with just under two minutes remaining.
From that point on, however, it was all Woodgrove. The Rams would not score again while the Wolverines got the key loose balls, outreached for rebounds, hit a few key baskets, and made their foul shots. All of the things you have to do well to succeed in the playoffs.
.Final score: Woodgrove 73 - Riverside 65
