2023.05.26 Boys Lacrosse: Region 4C Championship, Broad Run @ Dominion

Sterling, VA (May 26, 2023) - The Dominion Titans are positioned well for a deep playoff run. Undefeated in district play, they had a strong, if not unblemished, overall campaign at 12-4. Their losses came against big time local programs like Riverside, Robinson, and Yorktown. And the Titans also had an early May loss to E.C. Glass--a team that looms large on the way to states.

The Broad Run Spartans, on the other side of the field in this championship game, had a modest season with a good district record, 4-2, and a less impressive 6-11 overall mark. But they had come on strong late in the season and had upset second-seeded Loudoun County to make it to the final.

In the first minute, Will Wajsgras opened the scoring for Dominion with a laser that beat Broad Run goalie Tyler Staub. That quick start was followed by two goals from Ethan Hulvey, and with a 3-0 lead after just three minutes of play, it looked like a rout was on tap. But the Spartans were up to the challenge and held the Titans scoreless for the remainder of the first quarter, thanks to solid defense and steady goaltending from Staub.

Dominion took control of the match in the second period. Wajsgras scored again, Jack Miller had two, and Diego Guitierrez and Gavin Burke each had one. Forced to play defense the whole quarter, Broad Run struggled with face-off control and could not muster lengthy or productive possessions. At halftime, the Titans had a commanding lead, 8-0.

Broad Run opened the second half with renewed energy and scored in the 26th minute. But that goal was followed by Dominion goals every two minutes to close out the third period with a 12-1 lead. Miller and Hulvey each contributed twice. Note: the Broad Run scorer was not identified during the game.

As the fourth period began, Miller and Brendan Pope extended the Dominion lead to 14-1, and both teams began giving reserves opportunities to play. On a positive note, Broad Run built some momentum for the state tournament, scoring five times in the final ten minutes. Riley Alberts had two, and Conrad Varblow and Jace Evans each had one.

With the region crown in hand, Dominion will host a first round Class 4 state tournament game while the Spartans will be on the road. Also headed to states are the aforementioned Glass (the 2021 state runner-up) and Atlee (the 2022 state champion). The opponent in each of those finals? The Dominion Titans.

Final Score: Dominion 14 - Broad Run 6
