2022.11.18 Football: Region 4C Semifinal, Sherando @ Loudoun County

Leesburg, VA (November 18, 2022) - Hoping to extend their perfect season, the Loudoun County Captains welcomed the Sherando Warriors to Sonny Pearson stadium for a Region 4C semifinal matchup. The Warriors finished second in the Northwestern District, but they had an impressive win over Loudoun Valley in the first round of regionals, so they had some momentum of their own coming into tonight's game. Neither team needed additional motivation as they both knew that a victory would propel the winner to the championship game.

The Captains opening drive featured all running plays including a 12-yard run into the end zone by Jason Murray. The Warriors first drive stalled almost before it began, and when Loudoun County took over they drove 60 yards--again with all runs. Murray capped this one off with a 24-yard run with 5:12 still remaining in the period. The next Warriors possession ended in an interception.

Q1: Loudoun County 14 - Sherando 0

After the interception, County moved the ball inside the Warriors' 5-yard line, but the Sherando defense stiffened and forced the Captains to settle for a field goal try, which was kicked wide. Almost instantly, Micah Carlson found Ashanti Santiago in the flat for a short pass that turned into an 80-yard touchdown for Sherando.

But the County offense got going again, and on fourth down Captains quarterback Zach Hensch found Joey Fitzpatrick to extend the lead back to fourteen, 21-7. On the Warriors next possession, Aaron DeLorenzo intercepted Carlson giving the ball to the Captains offense at midfield with 2:36 to go in the half. The unstoppable County offense scored again--on a pass to Jackson Snyder--to give the captains a three-touchdown lead as the half ended.

Halftime:  Loudoun County 28 - Sherando 7

The Warriors had their best quarter of the night with two touchdowns on passes to Jacob Manuel and Ashanti Santiago. But each time they started to build momentum, their scores were matched by running touchdowns from Hensch and Murray. For a quarter, the Warriors' passing game was as unstoppable as the Captains' running game, but they still trailed by two touchdowns.

Q3: Loudoun County 35 - Sherando 21

Loudoun County extended their lead again, 42-21, on another running touchdown from Murray, but Sherando answered with a scoring pass to Gavin Blye. The Warriors had a much better second half, but they simply ran out of steam and time to keep up with the relentless Captains attack, and Hensch would run in another score to seal the win and send Loudoun County on to the region championship.

Final: Loudoun County 49 - Sherando 28
