2022.11.03 Volleyball: Dominion @ James Wood

Winchester, VA (November 3, 2022) - With the region title on the line, the winner of this championship would get a coveted home quarterfinal game in the upcoming VHSL state tournament. Both the host James Wood Colonels and the Dominion Titans had impressive semifinal wins over the other's rival team, Millbrook and Rock Ridge, respectively. And those victories put the two best teams in the region on the court for the title match.

Chas Sumser Photography was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.

Set 1: Dominion 25 - James Wood 14 (1-0)

Jumping out to a 7-1 lead, the Titans stunned the capacity crowd on the home side of the court. The Colonels looked surprisingly shaky, but they gathered themselves somewhat as Dominion continued to play flawlessly. Opening up their largest lead at 20-9, the Titans sustained that margin to take the set.

Set 2: James Wood 25 - Dominion 18 (1-1)

With Brenna Corbin serving to open the set, James Wood got their game on track and took the early lead, 4-0. Chants of "she's a freshman" resounded as the Colonels' outside hiiter Kennedy Spaid powered impressive shots to increase the lead to 10-3. Dominion got back in the game with key service from Juliet Correll, while their patented defense and net play closed the gap to 18-17. But the Colonels got the momentum back, and finished the set with a flurry.

Set 3: James Wood 25 - Dominion 18 (2-1)

The third set was more of the same from James Wood. Bolting ahead, 7-1, the Colonels never led by less than six points. Dominion simply had no answer for the cruising Wood offense. The Titans' smoothly functioning attack seemed just a bit intimidated by the Colonels blocking scheme led by Melia Burch and Ella Kelchner.

Set 4: Dominion 25 - James Wood 17 (2-2)

With their chances to win looking slim, Dominion dug deep (literally) and took their first lead of the match since the first set at 10-9. Kaitlyn Demitz had a superb set with killing hits that James Wood could not defend. Once they went in front, the Titans held on to the lead and completed their best set of the night, sending the match to a deciding fifth set.

Set 5: James Wood 15 - Dominion 9 (3-2)

The momentum continued for the Titans as they briefly led, 2-0. But the next three points went to the Colonels. Forcing a Dominion timeout leading 5-3, James Wood never trailed again. The best and longest rally of the night came with the Colonels ahead 10-6, and it went the Wood way, effectively sealing the championship for the Colonels.

Final Score: James Wood 3 - Dominion 2
