2022.10.27 Volleyball: Broad Run @ Dominion

Sterling, VA (October 27, 2022) - The 2022 Dulles District volleyball regular season had been dominated by four teams: Rock Ridge, Dominion, Loudoun Valley, and Loudoun County. Lurking just outside that group, with a modest 8-7 record, were the Broad Run Spartans. And, In fact, all of their district losses came at the hands of the top four.

But this is why they have post-season tournaments. The Dominion Titans expected to be in the championship match, but the Spartans may have been the only ones that thought they had a chance. After a mild upset of Loudoun County, followed by a stunning win over top-seeded Rock Ridge, here they were with a chance to surprise everyone. And the winner of this match would advance to the Region 4C tournament.

Chas Sumser Photography was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.

Set 1: Dominion 25 - Broad Run 21 (1-0)

The Titans got off to a fast start behind the serving of Emma Adiaconitei. Leading quickly, 5-0, they extended their lead to 12-5 when Broad Run called their first timeout to try to slow the Dominion momentum. That idea paid off as the Spartans narrowed the margin to a single point at 15-14. But Titan outside hitter Kaitlyn Demitz led her team back in front at 21-16. Again the Spartans closed the gap, forcing a Dominion timeout at 22-19. And that reset was all Dominion needed to close out the set win.

Set 2: Dominion 25 - Broad Run 20 (2-0)

This time it was Broad Run starting fast led by solid serving from Kaitlyn Owens. She got the Spartans in front, 2-0, and they kept the set tight up to 6-6. But Demitz and Abigail Vasak took control from the service line and the attack line, respectively, and pushed Dominion out to a commanding 17-9 lead.

In their best scoring run of the night, Broad Run forced the Titans into an unexpected timeout with the Dominion lead whittled down to 18-16. The Spartan points came primarily via combined defensive blocking from Kendall Nolen and Sheridan Stephens that stifled the Titan attack. But momentum shifted back to the Titans as they closed out the set for the win.

Set 3: Dominion 25 - Broad Run 18 (3-0)

Again Broad Run started off with a 2-0 lead and kept the set close even longer up to 8-8. But the Titans began to take control and inched ahead to 16-13. At that point, Broad Run's Ryan Hicks came through with her biggest kill of the night--that looked like a possible game changer--at 16-14. But it was not to be as the Titans expanded the lead quickly to 20-14.

In a last gasp effort, Sophia Madden served the Spartans to within 20-18 and forced a Dominion timeout. After the reset, Titan senior Anna Adiaconitei entered the game and provided the serving spark her team needed to win the set, capture the district championship, and head to regionals.

Final Score: Dominion 3 - Broad Run 0
