2022.10.19 Volleyball: Briar Woods @ Riverside

Lansdowne, VA (October 19, 2022) - With one match remaining in the 2022 Potomac District volleyball regular season, the brackets for the tournament are still mostly unclear. The Riverside Rams and the Briar Woods Falcons had secured first round byes, but which team gets the top seed would be determined tonight.

Just a day before, the same two teams met at Briar Woods, and the Rams came away with a 3-2 win. That put Riverside ahead in the standings with a 7-1 record, while the Falcons are just behind at 7-2. This rematch at Riverside could change things, but Briar Woods will have to win to make that happen.

Chas Sumser Photography was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.

Set 1: Riverside 25 - Briar Woods 19 (1-0)

The teams exchanged points early, but Riverside began creating separation leading 9-6. The next point was a classic rally with both teams diving, blocking, and keeping the play alive at all costs. The Falcons won the point, but could not sustain the momentum as the Rams pulled away, forcing a Briar Woods timeout at 17-10. Behind serves from Skyler Riggio, the Falcons made it close, trailing by three at 21-18. But a Riverside timeout reversed the trend, and the Rams closed out the set.

Set 2: Briar Woods 25 - Riverside 19 (1-1)

Riverside led early, but the set was all tied up at 16-16 and again at 18-18. A big kill from Kyna Marimuthu and serves from Janssens Arabia gave the Falcons the push they needed  to take the set and tie the match score.

Set 3: Riverside 25 - Briar Woods 23 (2-1)

In the most competitive set of the night, Ava May served Riverside to a 4-0 lead, but Briar Woods came back to tie it at 6-6. Adriana Perodin had multiple punishing hits as the Rams built a steadily increasing lead, and when the Falcons called timeout they were trailing 18-11. But the timeout worked, and they stunned the Riverside crowd to take a 23-22 lead. But the Rams found their mojo for three straight set-winning points.

Set 4: Riverside 25 - Briar Woods (12) (3-1)

Perodin continued her impressive net play and led Riverside to a dominating set win. Briar Woods called a timeout trailing 12-5, but they could not stop the momentum or effectively return serves from Sage Duggal and Natalie Carlin. The Rams won the match, secured the regular season championship, and earned the top seed in the Potomac District tournament.

Final Score: Riverside 3 - Briar Woods 1
