2022.10.17 Field Hockey: Dominion @ Park View
Lansdowne, VA (October 17, 2022) - Entering the final regular season game of the season, Dulles District playoff positions were pretty much locked up. The visiting Dominion Titans had second place firmly in hand while the host Park View Patriots were wrapping up a tough season with no wins in the district, but some promising victories overall.
Chas Sumser Photography was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.
The Titan strategy seemed to be to score quickly and then substitute freely, and it worked flawlessly in the first period. Kiera Vanvoorhis scored first and Cate Kriesey added two goals before Dominion began shuttling fresh players into the match. The quarter was just half over when the Titans took a 3-0 lead. From that point on, play was a bit more balanced.
There are benefits for both teams in games like this. For Dominion, everyone gets playing time and preparation for a tough playoff run. For Park View, they get a chance to build some confidence and enjoy the game itself. To the credit of the coaches' on both sides, that's exactly what happened. Everyone on the field played competitively and with passion.
In the second quarter, Dominion's Riley Albanese added to the lead. At 4-0, the Titans continued to rotate players giving even their starting keeper a chance to play in the field and possibly score. But Park View's defense was solid and turned away every chance until Brooke Frishman scored again early in the third quarter to make it 5-0.
The score remained the same until Brynn Hunter added a goal for Dominion early in the fourth period. With the margin of victory now at 6-0, the league's "mercy rule" went into effect and the game became final. Although the Titans were clearly the stronger side, and could dominate when they wanted to, the generous sportsmanship they displayed made the game good for everyone involved.
Final Score: Dominion 6 - Park View 0
