2022.10.06 Field Hockey: Loudoun County @ Loudoun Valley

Ashburn, VA (October 6, 2022) - Coming into tonight's game, there wasn't much separating the Loudoun Valley Vikings from the Loudoun County Captains. The Vikings had the top spot in the Dulles District due to an unbeaten record, and the Captains were right behind with just one loss in district play.

That Captains loss, however, was a critical one just a few days ago to Dominion. And it meant that tonight's result would be full of importance. A Captains win would mean a three-way tie for first while a Valley victory would drop County to third place.

For three full quarters, the name of the game was defense. While Valley had the stronger attack, County was up to the task. Throughout the first half, the Vikings surged deep into the Captains end, but they were thwarted by tight and organized defenders.

Both teams were so compact in their ends that it was difficult to single out outstanding play from any single athlete. It wasn't just the goalies--although both were great--it was everyone surrounding them contributing consistently well throughout the game. Clearly, the Vikings had the best chances in the first half, but the halftime score remained locked at 0-0.

The third period was a breakthrough for County as they finally generated some direct pressure on the Valley net. But after that early push, the Vikings pushed back. With a minute remaining in the period, Valley's Kathryn Clarke hooked the ball at midfield and raced toward the County goal. With the Captains defense collapsing toward her, she whipped a pass to Addison Acham who crushed a shot for the go-ahead score, 1-0.

Play remained taut for the rest of the game, but neither team would score again. With the Valley win, and the Dominion victory earlier in the night, the Vikings retain sole possession of first place, with Dominion and Loudoun County right behind, respectively.

Final Score: Loudoun Valley 1 - Loudoun County 0
