2022.05.18 Girls Soccer: Potomac District Quarterfinal, Independence @ Stone Bridge

Ashburn, VA (May 18, 2022) - At season's end, there wasn't much separating the Stone Bridge Bulldogs and the Independence Tigers. Sporting the same overall record, both teams had lost five Potomac District games, but the Bulldogs had one more win and that earned them the fourth seed to the Tigers' fifth seed. That win was a 3-0 victory over Independence at the end of April.

Chas Sumser Photography was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.

Both teams were active and intense from the start. Stone Bridge had better chances, but Tiger keeper Reiley Fitzpatrick was in good form including a parry of a shot that was headed for the upper left corner late in the first half. Both teams played well at midfield, but Independence could not generate much that threatened Bulldog keeper Tatum Gorman.

Something clicked after halftime, and the field tilted a bit more in the Tigers' favor. Under more pressure than in the first half, Gorman was up to the challenge, but in the 56th minute Tiger forward Kaitlyn Nimmer found a loose ball in front of the goal and knocked it home for a sudden lead, 1-0.

After that goal, both teams surged and the intensity level ratcheted up another notch, but neither team could find another finishing touch and when the horn sounded the Tigers were on their way to the semifinals where they'll play top-seeded Briar Woods.

Final Score: Independence 1 - Stone Bridge 0
