2022.05.18 Boys Soccer: Potomac District Quarterfinal, Independence @ Stone Bridge

Ashburn, VA (May 18, 2022) - It was a big night at Stone Bridge because both soccer teams were hosting a Potomac District playoff game. Just like the girls team, the boys team was seeded fourth in the Potomac District and their opponent was the Independence Tigers. The Stone Bridge boys had a slightly better overall record than Independence, but there was just a game separating the two teams in the district standings--and that game was a 3-2 Bulldog win over the Tigers just two weeks ago.

Chas Sumser Photography was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.

After a grueling first thirty minutes, Stone Bridge broke the stalemate on a goal from  opportunistic Bulldog attacker, Bogdan Federovych, who gave his team a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute. Up to that point both teams were playing aggressive, challenging soccer, but the play was confined largely to the midfield third and had not amounted to many threatening chances. The score remained unchanged at the halftime break.

As could be expected with a spot in the semifinals on the line, the intensity increased immediately after the second half opened. Both teams played clean, hard soccer and the number of chances grew for both teams. But twenty minutes later the score remained the same, and the Tigers' desperation began to grow.

In the 64th minute, Independence got the break they needed when handling was called in the Stone Bridge penalty area. After Jack Sturman crushed the ensuing PK into the right side of the net, it was 1-1 and the Tigers had the momentum.

And that momentum lasted for all of four minutes. In the 68th minute, Bulldog Tash Andkhoie out-jumped everyone to head home a corner kick and give Stone Bridge a 2-1 lead. Hoping to get back in the game Independence surged again, but were stunned when Mustafa Elwasila struck from the left wing and lofted a shot into the upper right corner for an insurmountable lead and passage to the semifinals versus top-seeded Briar Woods.

Final Score: Stone Bridge 3 - Independence 1
