2022.05.02 Boys Soccer: Park View @ Loudoun Valley

Purcellville, VA (May 2, 2022) - For the last few years, when the Park View Patriots play the Loudoun Valley Vikings in boys soccer, it's a "must see" event, and this season is no exception. There are several teams in the hunt for Dulles District leadership, but with overall records of  8-1-2 and 8-2-0, respectively, both teams have a shot at the top of the standings. And to add to the excitement, both teams are ranked in the Washington Post Top 10.

Chas Sumser Photography was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.

The first twenty minutes of the match went about as expected. Both defenses established strong fronts, and the play at midfield was about even. Park View had the more dangerous opportunities, but a 0-0 score at that point was a good representation of the match.

But in the 21st minute, Park View got on the board with a goal from Jonathan Bonilla. And the Patriots kept up the pressure and momentum with another shot barely missing the left side of Henry McLellan's Loudoun Valley net.

But Park View didn't score, and in the 34th minute Valley's Brian Boner slotted a nifty ball through to Sebastian Jung who drove it past the defenseless Park View keeper, Francis Cardenas. With the score now tied at halftime, 1-1, would that late goal tilt the match toward Valley?

The answer? A resounding yes.

In the 43rd minute, right after halftime, Cardenas made a daring attempt at stopping a wide Viking run down the right side. But Ryan Cassidy kept control of the ball and passed to a wide open Boner for a sudden 2-1 Loudoun Valley lead.

But that was only the beginning. In the 61st minute, Cassidy would score one of his own and then add a second just two minutes later. And less than a minute after that, Boner would add his second goal, ballooning the Valley lead to 5-1.

Three Loudoun Valley goals in two minutes simply put the game out of reach. While Park View's Gleb Tchernych would finish a rebound off a corner kick deflection--and while the Patriots did put on an impressive push for the last ten minutes of the game--one additional goal was all they would collect before time expired.

Final Score: Loudoun Valley 5 - Park View 2
