2022.04.26 Girls Lacrosse: Riverside @ Independence

Brambleton, VA (April 26, 2022) - Other than the cool, slightly rainy conditions, the setup was perfect. The undefeated Independence Tigers were opening Potomac District play on their home field, and their opponent was perennial Class 5 power, the Riverside Rams. The visitors had lost just one game, a thumping by Dominion on April 1, but had otherwise easily handled everyone they had played. Possession of the early district lead was on the line, and both teams were ready to play.

Chas Sumser Photography was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.

For the first five minutes, Independence had the momentum. After early goals by Rachelle Gauthier and Aria Webster, they held a 2-1 lead over the Rams. But that was the last time the Tigers would be in front. Two goals from Madison Broyhill and one from Brookelyn Morrison sparked a two-minute surge and a 4-2 Riverside lead that they would never relinquish.

At halftime, the Rams led by that same margin, 6-4, but Gauthier scored a quick goal as the second half opened, cutting the lead in half and giving the the Tigers new life. Unfortunately for Independence, Lydia Oldknow was on the other team and the powerful attacker willed her squad back in front. Each time the Tigers got close, Oldknow would rush through the opposing defense and score again.

With about ten minutes remaining, Independence was making an intense push on Rams goalie Celeste Endo. But Riverside made a stop and launched Grace Greason to a back-breaking fast break goal giving the Rams a three-goal lead for the second time of the night. That goal just about broke the Tigers' spirit.

Amazingly, Gauthier would score three more times for Independence. The Rams defense simply had no match for the diminutive attacker as she sliced her way to the Riverside goal, winding up with five for the match. But each time Gauthier or Webster (2) scored for the Tigers, there was Oldknow (5), Morrison (4), or Broyhill (3) as a a counter balance.

The game was closer than the final score indicates, but, for now, Riverside is the team to beat In the Potomac District.

Final Score: Riverside 14 - Independence 10
