2022.02.15 Girls Basketball: Park View @ Broad Run

Ashburn, VA (February 15, 2022) - The Park View Patriots earned their spot in the Dulles District tournament by beating Rock Ridge in the play-in game. But that meant they would face the Broad Run Spartans, the top seed, on their home court. And Broad Run had extra motivation after dropping their final game of the season to Tuscarora--the only blemish to their district schedule.

Chas Sumser Photography was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.

At first, Park View seemed able to compete with the Spartans. Midway through the first quarter they were down just 5-2, but then Broad Run began applying a pesky full-court defense that the Patriots could not break When the period ended, the margin had expanded to ten points, 20-10. And that's when Broad Run took off.

The first sound anyone heard as the second quarter began came from the home announcer with his patented, "Lee for threeeeee" call. That was also the last sound heard in the quarter as the Spartans unstoppable Yvonne Lee sank long range shots to bookend a 21-0 surge that left the Patriots gasping at halftime down 41-10.

With 3:50 left in the third period, Park View scored again, but only after the margin had increased to over thirty points, 51-10, and Broad Run had begun resting their starters. With Lee, Sajol Thornhill, and Sydney Sokol all on the bench the Patriots were able to find a bit more space to work their offense for the remainder of the game.

To their credit, Park View never gave up. Although they found fruitful only a few of their offensive tactics, they remained together as a team. Anna Helstrom was relentless in a losing cause as she bore the primary responsible for handling the ball for her team under constant pressure from the Broad Run press.

Final Score: Broad Run 63 - Park View 23
