2022.02.15 Boys Basketball: Rock Ridge @ Broad Run

Ashburn, VA (February 15, 2022) - In the Dulles District standings there wasn't much difference between the Broad Run Spartans and the Rock Ridge Phoenix. Both teams finished 9-6 in district play, and each had twelve wins overall. But Broad Run was victorious in both earlier meetings between the two teams. The games were relatively close, but they gave the Spartans the chance to host this playoff matchup between the fourth and fifth seeds.

From the outset, Broad Run employed a shutdown defense. With a slight height advantage over the Phoenix they were able to eliminate the Rock Ridge inside game and force them to search for outside shots. That defense fueled the Spartan fast break offense and gave the home team a 13-5 lead at the end of the first period. Even so, Rock Ridge remained competitive.

The game opened up at both ends of the court in the second period. Broad Run's Elias Will hit two consecutive three-point shots to get things going, and Arnav Thornhill went on an acrobatic tear as he orchestrated a fired-up Spartan offense. Rock Ridge was not out of it, but still could not get anything consistent going on offense, trailing at halftime 34-19.

Things got a little chippy in the third quarter. Thornhill was assessed a technical foul which gave Rock Ridge its first bit of momentum and closed the margin to 36-23. But Broad Run opened it up again to 47-27 by the end of the period.

Sensing the end of their season, Rock Ridge played with a frenetic, nothing-to-lose style for the remainder of the game, and credit goes to the Phoenix for not giving up. As both teams began removing their starters it didn't seem like a dominating  win for Broad Run, but the scoreboard proved otherwise.

Final Score: Broad Run 63 - Rock Ridge 36
