2022.02.10 Girls Basketball: Loudoun County @ Heritage

Leesburg, VA (February 10, 2022) - With seedings already set for the Dulles District tournament, this game really didn't matter. In fact, it was a preview of next Tuesday's game when the fifth-seeded Loudoun County Captains will travel across town to play the 4th-seeded Heritage Pride. So the two teams probably could have just skipped this one.

But they didn't.

Chas Sumser Photography was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.

Both teams started off slow, and midway through the first quarter the Captains led by just 4-2. But then--in a manner that would define this game--the Captains went on a brief offensive streak to extend their lead to 9-4, at the break. More such streaks to come.

To start the next quarter, Heritage went on their first streak of the game, and suddenly they were leading  17-13, outscoring County 13-4 over a four-minute stretch. Ayanna McNair was the fuel that the Pride needed as she aggressively attacked the boards at both ends of the court and extended the lead even more to 24-17 at halftime.

And then it was the Captains turn to take control. Energized by floor leader Jenny Allen, to open the third period they scored seven straight unanswered and tied the game, 24-24. But Heritage fought back with six in a row for a 30-24 lead before County took the lead back, 31-30. After tying the score at 31, the Pride's Addison Padgett hit a deep shot at the buzzer to make it 34-31 heading into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth, it was all about defense as both teams pressed full court. What should have been a meaningless game in preparation for the playoffs, now became an intense back-and-forth affair with the lead changing hands four times in the final three minutes. With 0:12 left, the Captains had a 41-40 lead, but Nina Erickson nailed a long jumper with less than a second remaining to capture the win for the Pride.

Final Score: Heritage 43 - Loudoun County 41
