2022.02.01 Girls Basketball: Potomac Falls @ Woodgrove

Purcellville, VA (February 1, 2022) - A huge story has developed this season in Purcellville. The Woodgrove Wolverines are undefeated overall and in the Dulles District, and they are the only LCPS basketball team (men or women) that can make that boast. The Broad Run Spartans girls team is close, but they have one loss on the season.

The senior-led Potomac Falls Panthers came to play tonight hoping to break the Wolverines' streak, but it would take a mammoth effort to slow the home team's momentum.

Chas Sumser Photography was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.

The Panthers had to be pleased with their play in the first half. They kept it close, down only 10-6 at the end of the first quarter and 25-17 at halftime. But this was slow-building, relentless momentum for the Wolverines. Rather than a crushing approach, Woodgrove applied a steady, forceful style that gradually broke down their opponent with each period resulting in a bigger lead.

The Wolverines strength was in the middle as Ashley Steadman and Colette Bain brought power and control to both ends of the court.

As the second half commenced, the Woodgrove lead continued to grow, and now it seemed that the home team had full control of the boards. While the Panthers continued to find scoring opportunities, if they missed the first shot they rarely got a second chance. The visitors weren't intimidated, they were just overpowered for the bulk of the last two quarters.

With tonight's win, Woodgrove has just four to play to complete an undefeated regular season campaign. But one of those opponents is at Briar Woods--their toughest challenge remaining--in just three days.

Final Score: Woodgrove 54 - Potomac Falls 35
