2022.01.31 Girls Basketball: Independence @ Riverside

Lansdowne, VA (January 31, 2022) - The Independence Tigers entered the Riverside gym with the baggage of an 0-14 season, so far, and no wins in the Potomac District. When you're having a tough campaign like that, motivation and optimism are two things hard to come by. To make it even tougher, the home-standing Rams were having a strong season overall, at 12-6, and were ranked in the top half of the district.

As expected, the Rams opened up in a full-court press, and the Tigers were unable to break through with any consistency. When they did get the ball up the court there was no room for even a good look at the basket, and Independence fell behind quickly, 21-6, at the end of the first quarter. Elizabeth Joo, the only senior on a young Riverside squad, led her team with early baskets and suffocating defense.

To their credit, Independence trimmed the margin slightly in the second quarter. Midway through the period it was 25-12, and the Tigers seemed sturdier and able to occasionally break the Ram blockade as halftime neared.

But Riverside exploded again in the third quarter, pushing the lead to thirty points as the period ended, 49-19. This margin gave Riverside head coach Sarah Wetmore a chance to liberally substitute her lineup in the final period to give valuable experience to her roster as they head into the final stretch of the district schedule.

Final Score: Riverside 57 - Independence 25
