2021.11.05 Football: Broad Run @ Tuscarora

Leesburg, VA (November 5, 2021) - A gorgeous sunset set the tone for the Tuscarora Huskies senior night honoring football, cheer, and band members of the Class of 2021. With emotion and sentiment running high before game time, there was still the matter of playing the game against the Broad Run Spartans. And with four teams vying for seeding in the upcoming regional tournament--including these two--it was time to get to work.

Chas Sumser Photography was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.

Tuscarora deferred and kicked off to Broad Run to start the game. And on the first play from scrimmage the Spartans fumbled a lateral pass which was recovered by the Huskies. But the Broad Run defense, and an untimely holding penalty, forced Tuscarora to settle for a field goal. After an unproductive drive for each team went without points, the first quarter ended with the Huskies leading, 3-0.

Midway through the second quarter, the Spartans' Brett Griffis found Isaiah Lemmond for a short touchdown and Broad Run's first lead of the night, 7-3. The rest of the period was all Bryce Duke as the Tuscarora running back broke off two brilliant touchdown runs of over forty yards giving the Huskies all the momentum and a halftime lead of 17-7.

Neither team scored in the third quarter, but the period ended with Broad Run driving, and on the first play of the final period Griffis found a receiver who was tackled just short of the end zone. It only took one play for Aslin Shipe to score, and with the score now 17-14 momentum was shifting to the Broad Run side.

The first play after the kickoff was the turning point of the game. Tuscarora fumbled and Broad Run recovered on the Huskies 39 yard line. Another long pass from Griffis hit Arnav Thornhill in the right corner of the end zone, and it was suddenly 20-17, Broad Run. The extra point attempt failed, but the Spartans were firmly in command.

Tuscarora had plenty of time to score, but their next drive stalled and they were forced to punt. Again Broad Run mounted a clock-chewing drive, and when Alex Estes converted a short run into a touchdown, making the score 27-17, there was little clock remaining for the Huskies to come back. And that final chance ended when Alex Biddle intercepted a last gasp pass from Sonny Manino to run out the clock.

Final Score: Broad Run 27 - Tuscarora 17
