2021.11.02 Volleyball: VHSL Region 4C Semifinal

Leesburg, VA (November 2, 2021) - When teams get to regionals, they're usually seeing each other for the first time. But that wasn't the case when the Loudoun County Captains and the James Wood Colonels met in a Region 4C semifinal. In fact, it was the very first game of the season for both teams, and the Captains won that one 3-0, but both teams had come a long way since then.

Entering the game, the Colonels were 17-6 including a Northwestern District finals loss to Millbrook. The Captains had victories in all but two matches, falling to Stone Bridge and Flint Hill, and had swept through the Dulles District tournament. The question was, had the Colonels progressed enough to close the gap on County?

Chas Sumser Photography was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.

In the first set, the answer was pretty clearly, "no." Loudoun County was simply too strong and forced James Wood into timeouts at 9-1 and 17-6. The Captains went on to win easily, 25-10, and it looked like the match would be over quickly.

But the Colonels proved they had earned the right to be there as they stayed with County shot-for-shot until they took their first lead at 13-12. The Captains took command back and led 19-15 when the Colonels called timeout to change the flow of the game--and it worked. Tying the match at 20-20, the Captains had to call timeout--a highlight of the match for James Wood. But that timeout worked, too, as Loudoun County went on to win, 25-23.

In the third set, the Captains bolted out to a 7-1 lead and never looked back. Winning handily, 25-12, County advances to the region final where they will face Millbrook.

Final Score: Loudoun County 3 - James Wood 0
