2021.10.18 Volleyball: Riverside @ Dominion

Sterling, VA (October 18, 2021) - The Riverside Rams and the Dominion Titans volleyball teams don't play each other very often. They're in different VHSL classifications and different districts, but they are similar in other important ways for this time of year. Both are having winning seasons, not dominant ones, and both are vying to remain in the top of their playoff brackets. A win would help solidify their standings.

Chas Sumser Photography was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.

Playing without team leader Charlotte Cottrell, who suffered a serious injury recently, the Titans needed others to step up, and they got that from Kaitlyn Demitz. The freshman hitter was instrumental in getting her team off to a fast start and taking the first set easily, 25-10.

Dominion continued apace to start the second set, but Riverside roared back to take an impressive 21-12 lead. Led by consistent sets from Ava Ray and power shots from Zoe Thomas, the Rams held off a late surge from the Titans to take the second set, 25-22, and tie the match.

The third set was all Riverside as they bolted out to a 10-3 lead and forced an early timeout for Dominion. Again the Titans regained composure and narrowed the lead, but the Rams held on for a 25-19 win and a 2-1 match lead.

The script flipped when the two teams returned to the court. Knowing they had to win to stay in the match, it was Dominion that took the 10-3 lead. Unfortunately, that margin evaporated by the time the two teams reached 15-15. After that it was anyone's game with the lead changing hands multiple times all the way up to 25-25. But, finally, the Rams scored two consecutive points to take the set, 27-25, and the match.

Final Score: Riverside 3 - Dominion 1
