2021.09.28 Volleyball: Stone Bridge @ Riverside

Lansdowne, VA (September 28, 2021) - Coming in to this contest, the Riverside Rams and the Stone Bridge Bulldogs were both 1-0 in the Potomac District. And their overall records were almost equally impressive. The Rams were 6-1 with a huge 3-0 win over Independence the previous night, while the Bulldogs were 11-2 bolstered by a 4-1 record in a Western Albemarle tournament on 9/11 and a rare win over perennial power Loudoun County.

With the season just now turning into heavy district action for everyone, this one was an early measuring stick for two of the best teams so far.

Chas Sumser Photography was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.

The first set went quickly to the Bulldogs. At 16-8, Riverside was forced to call their first timeout and then they called two more before succumbing at 25-19. The second set had a similar ending, but the Rams had the lead at 11-10 before Stone Bridge took over to win 25-22. In both sets, the Bulldogs were led by the consistent setting of the diminutive Trisha Guevara who played virtually mistake-free and evenly distributed the ball to hitters from the front and back lines.

But in the third set Riverside got it going and jumped out to a 7-1 lead that forced Stone Bridge to call a timeout of their own and again at 17-10. The balanced attack and steady defense that was missing for the Rams earlier was back at full strength, and they won the set easily  at 25-16. Seniors Kendall McDaniel and Zoe Thomas led the way with huge hitting from Hailey Flynn. With the set score now at 2-1, it looked like the match could go either way.

The fourth set was the most evenly played of the match. At 10-10 it was still anyone's game, but slowly the Bulldogs began to take control. Lilah Stevens had been hitting well all night, and led the Stone Bridge attack in this game, too. The Rams had a final surge and came as close as 21-20, but Stone Bridge took four of the final five points to win 25-22, and go home with another win.

Final Score: Stone Bridge 3 - Riverside 1
