The Plains, VA (August 28, 2021) - The heat was expected to be intense, so the Great Meadow race organizers made the start times earlier and compressed the schedule to deal with it. Even so, a hazy, hot, humid morning greeted forty teams from across the region. Late August meets present a familiar steamy challenge for the more seasoned varsity runners, but a new and grueling one for the many runners out for their first taste of competition.

As has been the tradition, these six races do not fully follow the VA state championship course that takes place inside the park's equestrian arena at the end of the season. Instead, it takes one of the tougher 1.5 mile stretches and has the runners do it twice to complete the 5k circuit. By the time the competitors are headed for home, their feet are wishing that the one creek on the route was a little deeper and a lot colder.

Chas Sumser Photography was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the meet.
