Sterling, VA (June 22, 2021) - The George Mason Mustangs started the season with a trouncing at the hands of Paul VI. That wakeup call sent them on undefeated ten-game run concluding with a win over Kettle Run in the Region 4B championship and earning a spot in the Class 4 state championship round.

Their opponent, hosting the match, was the Dominion Titans. Their unbeaten romp through the season included twelve straight wins while scoring an average of nineteen goals per game. And only Independence, in the Region 4C final, had scored more than three goals against them.

Chas Sumser Photography was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.

The Titans scored quickly and easily to take a two-goal lead in the first four minutes of the game, and it looked like another rout might be on hand for Dominion. But George Mason's Ashley Zigler scored in the 6th minute to make it 2-1. Dominion's Lindsey Wright and Mason's Bella Paradiso would exchange the next two goals, and the visiting sideline had reason to believe that their team could stay with the overwhelming favorites in the match.

But Dominion went on a five-goal tear to end the first half leading, 8-2. The Titans' Molly Battaglie powered the run with multiple goals and assists including a brilliant behind the back shot of her own.

The second half was more of the same. Much more, in fact, than George Mason had hoped. The Mustangs would score only one more time while Dominion added thirteen additional goals from seven different players to reach their season average. The run included a creative, scooping shot for goal from Lindsey Wright and two consecutive goals late in the period from Ava Field.

George Mason ends a great season, and has nothing to regret by losing to a team with the talent, skill and speed that Dominion brings to the field. And it has to be said that even while on the wrong end of a lopsided score late in the game, the Mason bench and stands could be heard encouraging their team on every play.

The Dominion stands roared with approval, too, each time it became more clear that their team was on the way to the Class 4 state championship match. An amazing season-long streak continues.

Final Score: Dominion 19 - George Mason 3
