Sterling, VA (June 15, 2021) - When you make it all the way to the region semifinals, you don't expect to be playing a team that you had already beaten soundly, 19-2, earlier in the season. But that was the case when the Dominion Titans hosted the Broad Run Spartans for a chance to go the Region 4C championship.

Chas Sumser Photography was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.

To look at it a different way, the Spartans had also had an excellent season, finishing with a 6-4 overall and 5-3 in the Dulles District. They then went on to beat Loudoun County in the first round of regionals to earn their spot in the semifinals. They deserved to be here, and, frankly, Dominion had beaten just about everyone by similar regular season margins.

The Titans opened the game scoring at a rate of a goal per minute. In quick succession, Tierney Schaible, Cate Kriesel, Molly Battaglia, and Jamie Lee scored for Dominion, and an onslaught seemed to be in order. But Broad Run had come to play, and they quickly scored two goals, by Samantha Wootten and Sydney Lundberg, to cut the lead in half.

Those Spartan goals definitely fired up at least one Titan. On the ensuing face-off, Schaible scooped the ball up, tore through the middle of the Broad Run defense, fired one past the helpless goalkeeper, and opened up a nine-goal Dominion run that was only interrupted by a Broad Run goal just seconds before halftime, making the score 13-3 at the break.

The scoring slowed in the second half, which is a nod to good sportsmanship and a credit to Broad Run's effort. In the end, the Spartans scored more goals against Dominion than any other team had produced, and the Titans also maintained their high standard of excellence.

Broad Run is done for the season while Dominion is headed to the Region 4C title game and possible, if not likely, state level competition.

Final Score: Dominion 19 - Broad Run 5
