Winchester, VA (June 14, 2021) - With bad weather threatening, the James Wood Colonels prepared to host the Loudoun County Captains in a first ever regional semifinal for the home side. As they got ready to take the field a cry of, "come out fast and hard" resonated over their tightly knit pre-game cluster of soccer players. On the other side of the pitch, the feeling was equally intense.

And then the whistle blew.

Chas Sumser Photography was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.

Led by Seth Hammond, the Colonels actually did come out fast and hard just like they planned. Only a minute into the game the speedy attacker scored, and two minutes later he did it again to give his team a sudden 2-0 lead. The Loudoun County defense was reeling when another strike, this time from John Ballentine, hit the back of the net to make it 3-0 with very little time gone.

Finally, the Captains showed some life when resilient midfielder John Creighton crushed a shot off the left post to narrow the margin to 3-1. But moments later Wood's Dashawn Paige would be left alone at the top of County's penalty area giving him time to calmly place a shot for another Colonels goal, 4-1.

Hammond and Loudoun County's Wilson Kern would then exchange penalty kick finishes to make it 5-2, and Hammond would add his fourth goal to end the first half at 6-2.

Unfortunately, storms caused the cancellation of the remainder of the game. But James Wood had packed a wallop into the first forty minutes and their win was all but assured regardless.

It would be easy to call this a one-man show--and Hammond was simply brilliant--but it was more than that., much more of a complete team domination from front to back.

Next up for the Colonels, the equally brilliant Park View Patriots in the Region 4C final.

Final Score: James Wood 6 - Loudoun County 2
