Ashburn, VA (January 12, 2021) - In its relatively short history, Rock Ridge boys basketball has operated in the long shadow of their cross town rival, Stone Bridge. They were often close, but just not enough, and coming in to this game, the one-loss Phoenix was once again positioned just behind the undefeated Bulldogs.

Chas Sumser Photography was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.

Inconsistent with their typical breakneck, pressing style, Rock Ridge got off to a slow start. On the other hand, Stone Bridge's sharpshooters were on their game. Neither team scored right away, but when the Phoenix was forced to call an early timeout they were already down, 6-0. The Bulldogs' Jacob Thomas was the clear floor leader on both ends of the court.

Rock Ridge worked their way back into the game and narrowed the margin to just two points at the end of the first quarter, trailing only 15-13.

Led by Greg Spurlock, the Phoenix exploded to take what seemed like a commanding lead midway through the second quarter, 26-19. But, of course, Stone Bridge countered with their own surge to go into the halftime break down by just two points, 28-26.

The third quarter was a tradeoff for a while, but it ended with Rock Ridge ahead by its largest margin, 44-34. They maintained a similar advantage through most of the final quarter, but that's when the Bulldogs showed their stuff--hitting two consecutive three-pointers to narrow the lead as time began to expire.

Rock Ridge held on for the win, 60-59, and it was a huge one for the program and the school. But in this COVID shortened season both teams know that they have to stay relentless. Even a single loss can make a huge difference to their post-season chances.

Mark your calendars for the January 28 rematch at Stone Bridge.

Final Score:Rock Ridge 60 - Stone Bridge 59
