Leesburg, VA (December 21, 2020) - A lot of things were different the last time the Loudoun County boys played a game on their home court. Back in February they were playing in the regional tournament and they were called the Raiders. And COVID-19 was just a rumor.
But when the Dominion Titans arrived they were playing the Captains in the first game, in any sport really, of this entire year. Masks and social distancing were ever present, but this game meant just a little bit of normalcy to so many.
Chas Sumser Photography was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.
When the game started, both teams seemed a little rusty. After all, they had only just formed teams and had just a few weeks to get ready for a shortened season. The Titans were the first to build momentum as they took an 11-3 lead near the end of the first quarter. But before the buzzer rang out, the Captains had sliced into that lead to make it 12-7, Dominion.
When the second quarter began, Loudoun County came all the way back and took a brief lead at 13-12, but the Titans pushed their lead out to eight points behind the play of Justin Mann. The senior flashed brilliance at both ends of the court, blocking shots on defense and leading Dominion to what seemed like a commanding 23-15 halftime lead.
But Loudoun County was not done yet. They came out in a pressing defense to start the second half and began to cut into the lead. Center Nate Brown asserted his size advantage, and his teammates followed to exhibit a more coordinated overall game.
Amazingly, after trailing for virtually the entire contest, the Captains took the lead at 48-46 with just under two minutes remaining. But the Titans nailed a three-pointer to go back in front and then sealed the victory with a thunderous dunk from Mann.
The rust is officially gone and the new season is underway.
Final Score: Dominion 55 - Loudoun County 50
