Ashburn, VA (May 24, 2019) - The Briar Woods Falcons had reached the Potomac District boys soccer tournament final on the crest of an undefeated campaign. One of the few teams in any LCPS sport to do so this year, they had dominated their opponents from the outset.
During the regular season, the Falcons had already beaten Freedom twice by healthy margins, but the Eagles had earned their spot in the final by finishing second during the regular season and outlasting Broad Run in the semifinals.
Chas Sumser Photography was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.
The game began as a defensive standoff with both teams holding their lines and goalkeepers efficiently handling any challenges. Briar Woods had better possession at midfield, but could not get their vaunted attack untracked initially. But as the first half wore on, more of the play settled into the Freedom defensive end.
But that standoff ended, and quickly, in the 29th minute as Mason Shockley and Wes Anderson scored within seconds of each other to give the Falcons a commanding lead at , 2-0. The Eagle defense was reeling, but managed to maintain that margin to the halftime break.
Briar Woods would simply control the second half. Scoring twice more, on goals from Nick Bronson and Kyle Lowe, the outcome was never in doubt. But Freedom had a few excellent chances of their own just without the finishing touches.
On the wrong end of a 4-0 shutout, Freeom's Jack Sirmenis was brilliant in goal for the Eagles. At one point in the second half, the acrobatic keeper stopped two point-blank shots in quick succession. The gap between these two top-ranked teams was apparent overall, but this goalkeeper kept his team in striking distance and will give the Eagles a good chance in the upcoming regional tournament.
Final Score: Briar Woods 4 - Freedom 0
