Purcellville, VA (February 5, 2019) – At 18-2 overall and 11-0 in the Dulles District, the visiting Loudoun Valley Vikings had already clinched the top seed in the post-season tournament. But the Woodgrove Wolverines, having an excellent season as well, were on a mission to establish a high seed of their own. A win tonight could separate them from Riverside and would help secure the second position.

And, besides, a rivalry game like this is always good--and the gym was packed and pink well ahead of the scheduled start time, a good sign for the home team.

Chas Sumser Photography was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.

The night started off at a modest change, but that would quickly change as speed would be the difference in this one. In the first quarter, both teams showed determination and grit, and the Vikings gained a slight lead, 12-9. Woodgrove's Katherine Fortin set the tone for her team with hustle and focus as she moved the ball up and down the floor.

But the pace of the game clearly changed in the second quarter--and the catalyst was Loudoun Valley's Olivia Badura. As she increased her energy, her team followed suit and began to pull away, building a 14-point margin by halftime. Badura would leave the game after running full-steam into a Woodgrove pick, but she had already established the game's momentum and would later return.

Loudoun Valley would continue their torrid tempo in the third quarter, and despite the Wolverines' best efforts they simply could not keep up. They also had no match in the middle as Megan Stevenson, the Vikings' superlative center, controlled the lane on both ends. As the quarter ended, the visitors had an insurmountable lead, 49-22.

To their credit, Woodgrove did not back down even when so far behind. In fact, they reduced the lead enough in the final quarter to take back some of the game's momentum, which will come in handy as the playoffs begin.

Final score: Loudoun Valley 56 - Woodgrove 38
